Robert F. Kennedy Jr. running for US Senate in North Carolina

Challenging incumbent Richard Burr as an independent

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, announced Monday that he will run for U.S. Senate in North Carolina as an independent.

Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and activist, said he is running because he believes the country is at a "critical moment" and that the current political system is "broken."

“I am running for the United States Senate because I believe that we are at a critical moment in our nation's history,” Kennedy said in a statement. “The political system is broken, and the people are losing faith in our government. I am running to change that."

Kennedy is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump

Kennedy has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, calling him a "sociopath" and a "threat to our democracy."

He has also been critical of the Republican-controlled Congress, saying that they have "failed the American people."

Kennedy is running against incumbent Republican Senator Richard Burr, who is seeking a third term.

Burr is a close ally of Trump

Burr is a close ally of Trump and has voted in favor of the president's agenda on a number of issues, including tax cuts and the appointment of conservative judges.

Kennedy is likely to face an uphill battle in the race, as North Carolina is a Republican-leaning state.
