Challenging incumbent Richard Burr as an independent
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, announced Monday that he will run for U.S. Senate in North Carolina as an independent.
Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and activist, said he is running because he believes the country is at a "critical moment" and that the current political system is "broken."
“I am running for the United States Senate because I believe that we are at a critical moment in our nation's history,” Kennedy said in a statement. “The political system is broken, and the people are losing faith in our government. I am running to change that."
